IE 5 & 6 PNG Transparency Fix

Cross browser compatibility can be maddening. One of the nicest image formats to work with is the PNG format, however good ol' Internet Explorer versions 5 & 6 have no idea how to display these image types correctly, specifically if you have used any transparency in your PNG images you are out of luck trying to display it in IE 5 & 6 (by default that is.)

IE PNG Fix, developed by Angus Turnbull, is an awesome little piece of code that will add PNG support to IE 5 & 6 across your application. It is super easy to configure and very straight forward to use. I highly recommend you check it out if you want to use PNG images on your site:

PNG Transparency Browser Compatibility List

Compatible Browsers:
  • Netscape 6+
  • Opera 6+
  • Mozilla 1+
  • Firefox 1+
  • IE 7.0
Non-Compatible Browsers:
  • IE 5.5
  • IE 6
As you can see, with the exception of IE 5 & 6, PNG transparency is well supported and a great UI effect.
